Team
Dr. Michelle Mak
Growing up in Toronto I had a keen fascination for animals of all types from a young age. Having many family pets, including a business of ferrets, contributed to my interest in pursuing a career as a veterinarian. After graduating from the Ontario Veterinary College, I chose to move out to BC to explore the scenery, ocean, trails and mountains. I’ve been lucky to join the wonderful team at Richmond Animal Hospital and look forward to building connections with you and your pets! In my free time I enjoy trying restaurants in the lower mainland, venturing out on hikes, planning my next backpacking trip and learning to ski tour.
Dr. Avtar Ubi
Dr. Avtar has been a licensed veterinarian since 1988. He joined the armed forces as a veterinarian, before moving to Vancouver with his family. He has been Chair of the Board of Examiners for the BC Veterinary Medical Association; twice-elected Councilor for the College of Veterinarians of BC; and Vice President of the College of Veterinarians of BC. He likes working on medical cases, especially soft-tissue and orthopedic surgeries. In his spare time he likes hiking, playing group sports, and golfing. Dr. Avtar, his wife, and daughter Kiram, have a Pomeranian named Truffles.
Dr. Margaret Fisher
Dr. Margaret Fisher, a WCVM graduate from Saskatoon, is thrilled to be back in the clinic after maternity leave, reconnecting with her passion for animal care. Outside of work, she loves spending time with her 1.5-year-old son, who keeps her on her toes. A true feline fan, Dr. Fisher jokes that if given the choice, she’d come back as a pampered house cat. In 2011, she traveled through 22 countries, with Morocco stealing her heart. When she’s not at the clinic or with family, you might find her savoring her favorite food—Thai!
Dr. Karl Mcdermott
Growing up on a farm in Manorhamilton in north-west Ireland, I was surrounded by dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, horses, and goats, and wanted to become a veterinarian from a young age. I studied in Dublin and worked for two years in a mixed animal practice after completing my studies before recently moving to British Columbia. Working with such varied species back home was exciting and the variety of animals and cases we encounter here at Richmond Animal Hospital is exactly what I hoped for in this career.
Avril
Veterinary Practice Manager
After being in restaurants and retail stores for most of my working life, I needed a change so I enrolled in the Granville Business College Veterinary Office Assistant program. A short while after completing it, I was hired at RAH. 2021 will be 21 years I have worked here and in that time I have experienced many things. The best things about working here are our great clients, their great fur-friends and my co-workers.!
Josie
Lead Client Care Representative
I came to the Richmond Animal Hospital in 2005, first as a volunteer then later moving into my fulltime position in Reception. My background in customer service and my love of animals has made this job a perfect fit. I have found my work here be very rewarding and enjoy the challenges it brings. I am proud to be part of this dedicated compassionate team.
Miranda
Client Care Representative/Veterinary Assistant
After being in the Fashion Industry for many many years I realized it was not my real passion. My love for animals started at the youngest age I can remember and to ever pursue a career with animals was only a dream. After joining the Richmond Animal Hospital late 2009 I realized that someone can actually love their job.
Manda
Client Care Representative
Growing up on the East Coast, I’ve called Vancouver home for the past few years. My interest in cat behaviour has previously brought me into the world of animal rescue and sheltering, working for several years as the Adoptions Coordinator for a major shelter, bringing thousands of animals together with their new families.
Michelle
Client Care Representative/Veterinary Assistant
I was born and raised in Vancouver, BC and moved to Richmond in 2011. I have always had a love for animals and have wanted to work with them for as long as I can remember. I graduated from the Veterinary Office Assistant program at Granville College in June 2014 and then started my career at The Richmond Animal Hospital following my practicum.
Ruen
Lead Technician
I was born in the Island of the Philippines and immigrated to Canada with my parents many years ago. I had a degree in Marine Engineering from the Philippines. The first thing I did when I came here, was to look for a job. A family friend introduced me to Dr. Sandy Jamieson, the previous owner of The Richmond Animal Hospital. When I first started here, I thought it would be a great temporary job. However, after learning the principles of veterinary medicine and its objectives, I realized my search was over; I had found my perfect job. That was in 1983!
Michael
Lead Veterinary Assistant & Certified Professional Dog Trainer
I grew up in rural New Brunswick before moving to Newfoundland for graduate school, and ended up staying to work at and eventually manage the largest SPCA shelter on the island. While in NL I’m proud to have introduced policies and procedures that give a better quality of life to cats and dogs, particularly the feral cat population and dogs with behavioral needs.
Brittany
Veterinary Assistant
While growing up, I always had animals. From pocket pets to reptiles and, of course, dogs and cats! I have never been without them, so when it came to choosing a career, one with animals was a no brainer! I have been in the field now for 11 years. I have worked in hospitals, sanctuaries, and shelters. I have a cat named Heineken and a Mexican rescue pooch named Toph.
Alfie
Veterinary Technician
I was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to Canada many years ago! I had been working as a veterinarian technician in Hong Kong since 2003 and completed my vet tech course in Australia in 2016! I work with exotic pets and have many years’ experience in emergency veterinary medicine! I have experience with many different kinds of surgery including orthopedic (JPS, TPLO, TTA, spinal, etc), endoscopy, ultrasound, stem cell, and laparoscopic. I started working with The Richmond Animal Hospital in 2021! I can speak fluent Cantonese and understand Mandarin. My job is to make sure our patients and clients have the best treatment possible and understand all aspects of the treatment process.
Tito
King of Richmond Animal Hospital
Hi my name is Tito. I am the King of the Richmond Animal Hospital. I am a handsome male domestic medium haired cat. Most mornings you can find me on the reception desk “helping” with filing. Or, if you look closely, you may find me hiding in the cat food trying to sneak a sample. I also enjoy a fresh drink from the toilet (don’t try this at home), long cat-naps and chasing insects that come into the clinic.
